Laura

Laura is the sarcastic secretary of Dr. Katz. She is voiced by Laura Silverman. Laura, like Dr. Katz and Ben, appears in all episodes.

Laura's demeanor can be best described as abrasive, cynical, sarcastic and aloof. She shows little care for Dr. Katz' patients, as is evident from her usual reply to any question or comment of said patients; "Could you sit over there please?". Laura shows very little interest in her work and frequently takes time off without any real explanation. Also, she has a tendency to be occupied primarily with personal and private matters like trying to sell her house, making phone calls with lovers overseas and taking her sister's dog with her to work unannounced. Despite not liking her job, she shows little signs of attempting to get something better.

Laura is Ben's primary love interest from Pot-Bellied Pigs onwards. Her personality is in stark juxtaposition with that of Ben, and his awkward and immature attempts at courting her are usually met with derision and snide remarks. Her interactions with both Ben and Dr. Katz are usually very reluctant, like in Walk For Hunger and Used Car.

While Laura's attitude may appear callous, she does indeed have a softer side which sometimes surfaces like in Ticket and Undercover. In both episodes, Dr. Katz' gentle and insistent pressure lets Laura reveal certain truths about herself she could have kept for herself. As noted by many fans, Laura tends to loosen up a bit more in the later seasons en shows signs of humor and appreciation, even towards Ben.

Laura Silverman was chosen for the role since she was the then real-life girlfriend of H. Jon Benjamin, and it was noted by the creators how she would pick up the phone in a very curt and uninterested way whenever they called Benjamin. She turned out to be the perfect voice for "Dr. Katz' office". It was noted by many people who were involved in creating Dr. Katz that Benjamin and Silverman had a very rocky relationship, and that the resulting strain often permeated into their performances.
